Disabled Person's Allowance

This webpage explains how you may be able to get help with your domestic rate bill if you meet the requirements of the Disabled Person’s Allowance Scheme.

The following paragraphs provide more information about the scheme, who should apply and how you can get an application form.

About the Disabled Person’s Allowance Scheme

If you are, or someone else in your household is, a person with a disability, and you meet the conditions of this scheme, you may be entitled to a reduction of 25% in your domestic rate bill.

Your property must be adapted to meet the needs of a person with a disability who lives in your home. The types of adaptations that qualify are –

  • a room, other than a kitchen, bathroom or toilet, which is mainly used by the person with a disability;

  • an extra kitchen for the person with a disability;

  • an extra toilet for the person with a disability;

  • sufficient floor space to use a wheelchair easily.

There must be a clear link between how the property has been adapted and the disability, or we will not pay Disabled Person’s Allowance.

How to apply

To apply for the Disabled Person’s Allowance Scheme, the person who pays rates on the property needs to fill in an application form. To get an application form you can -

  • phone us on 0845 300 6360 ; minicom 0845 300 6361;

Filling in the application form

When you fill in the application form we will ask you for more information including -

  • some information about the disability along with any supporting medical evidence you may have. (We will also ask the person with a disability to give us permission, to contact (if necessary) their GP or health professional);

  • details of the adaptations that have been made to your home.

Home visit

A member of our team will visit your property to see how it has been adapted. Please tell us on the application form if you would like an interpreter to be present during the visit to the property.
