Relief for full-time students, trainees, under 18s and those leaving care

If you are

  • a full-time student;
  • in full-time training;
  • aged under 18, or
  • a young person leaving care

you may not have to pay any rates on your property (whether you own it or rent it) so long as you are either

  • living alone, or
  • in a property that is occupied only by other people in these groups.

Examples of courses and training
The types of courses and training that come under this scheme include

  • full-time study at further education colleges;
  • full-time degree courses;
  • full-time post-graduate education;
  • full-time teacher training;
  • full-time HNDs;
  • full-time nursing courses.

Landlords
If you are the landlord of a property occupied only  by people in the above groups, this rate relief may be awarded in respect of your tenants. However, you must show us that the benefit of this has been passed on to your tenants, for example, through reduced charges in rent.
